(Dis)ability and Beauty: Rethinking the Body

Our bodies – gendered, ethicized, sexualized, (dis)abled, controlled by beauty and fitness industry – can be regarded as cultural products signified by certain meanings. In such a context, “dis-abled” and “in-valid” bodies are culturally excluded as a norm of beauty. However, this repressive and exclusive nature of what is considered to be beautiful is challenged by contemporary designers, photographers and sportsmen, trying to redefine the meanings of a disabled body in culture. Student Daria Krivonos (University of Helsinki, REMS programme) will have a look at the historical mechanisms of positioning a disabled body in culture and discuss how it can be redefined and empowered through design and arts nowadays.

The International Autumn School on Nanostructured Materials for Biomedical Application is planned to provide interdisciplinary knowledge about the nanotechnology in biomedical and pharmaceutical applications to all kind of graduate students. During the four day school, a wide range of topics including nanostructured materials, characterization of nanostructures, drug administration routes and the current research trends will be covered.

Genocide - How to Come Beyond Silences?
